This pink granite statue of Queen Nefertari dates to around 1250 BC during the reign of her husband Ramesses II. She stands in a striding pose, wearing a tight-fitting sheath dress and the double-plumed crown of a great royal wife. Her expression is serene and idealized, reflecting the conventions of New Kingdom royal sculpture.
Nefertari held unusual political power for an Egyptian queen. She corresponded with foreign rulers and appeared alongside Ramesses in temple reliefs, depicted at nearly equal scale. The colossal statues of her at Abu Simbel stand 33 feet tall, a tribute Ramesses gave no other wife.
The statue is displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza pyramids. Nefertari's legacy endures through her painted tomb in the Valley of the Queens, widely considered the most beautiful burial chamber in Egypt.
