by Raphael, 1512
Raphael's Triumph of Galatea depicts the sea nymph riding triumphantly across the water in a shell chariot pulled by dolphins. Completed in 1512 as a fresco at Villa Farnesina in Rome, this work measures 295 x 225 cm and stands as one of the High Renaissance's finest mythological paintings.
The composition bursts with movement. Galatea occupies the center, her red cloak billowing as she gazes heavenward with serene composure. Around her, tritons and sea nymphs create a swirling procession: one triton abducts a nymph on the left while another sounds a shell trumpet. Overhead, cupids wielding bows and arrows aim at the figures below, their presence adding romantic tension to the scene. The fresco was commissioned by the wealthy banker Agostino Chigi for his villa, part of a mythological series inspired by the poetry of Angelo Poliziano.
