William Merritt Chase painted A Seated Gentleman Smoking a Pipe in 1875 during his studies in Munich, Germany. The work shows the influence of the dark, rich palette and bold brushwork he absorbed from the Old Masters there. A well-dressed man relaxes with his pipe, rendered with the realistic approach Chase favored before his later shift toward Impressionism.
Chase studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1872 to 1878, where he encountered the work of Dutch and Flemish masters. This early painting demonstrates his technical skill in capturing textures of fabric and the play of light on the figure. The intimate scale and casual subject matter anticipate his later interest in depicting modern leisure.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
