Impressionist painter and influential teacher William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) helped shape American art at the turn of the 20th century. Born in Indiana, he showed early talent and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York before traveling to Munich's Royal Academy (1872-1877), where he trained under Karl von Piloty. His German training emphasized bold brushwork and dark, tonal palettes in the old-master tradition that initially defined his style. But after returning to America, Chase lightened his colors under the influence of French Impressionism, particularly in his outdoor scenes of Shinnecock Hills on Long Island. These plein-air landscapes captured bright sunlight and open skies with loose, spontaneous brushwork that represented a new direction in American painting.
Chase's impact extended far beyond his own canvases. In 1891 he founded the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art, one of America's first important outdoor painting schools where students could learn to paint directly from nature. He taught there until 1902, holding classes among the dunes while his wife and eight children became frequent subjects. His teaching positions spanned the Art Students League, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Chase School (later Parsons School of Design). A charismatic instructor with strong opinions and worldly sophistication, Chase trained an entire generation of American modernists including Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Marsden Hartley, and Charles Demuth. He also painted elegant studio interiors and still lifes that showcased his virtuoso technique. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago hold significant collections, and the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island features his Shinnecock works.
