Aimé Millet (1819-1891) was a French sculptor who created the gilded bronze statue of Vercingetorix (1865) at Alise-Sainte-Reine in Burgundy, one of France's most iconic national monuments. The 21-foot figure of the Gallic chieftain who resisted Julius Caesar was commissioned by Napoleon III.
Millet also created the figure of Apollo on the roof of the Palais Garnier (Paris Opera House) and other public monuments. His work combines Romantic nationalist spirit with academic classical form.
