Alexander Blazys (1894-1963) was a Lithuanian-American sculptor who brought modernist sculpture to Cleveland after immigrating in 1925. He had studied in Europe and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris before settling in Ohio, where he headed the sculpture department at the Cleveland School of Art from 1926 to 1938.
Blazys won first prize for sculpture at the Cleveland Museum's annual May Shows three years running (1926-1928). His style merged rhythmic movement inspired by music with Cubist geometric planes, and he also designed ceramic pieces for Cowan Pottery. Our collection includes 3 works at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
