Andrea della Robbia
Italian
Andrea della Robbia (1435-1525) was a Florentine sculptor who inherited and refined the technique of glazed terracotta invented by his uncle Luca della Robbia. Born in Florence, he took over the family workshop and expanded production significantly, creating blue-and-white Madonna reliefs, altarpieces, and architectural ornaments for churches across Tuscany.
Andrea's style is sweeter and more tender than Luca's, with gentle Madonnas and charming infant figures that proved enormously popular. The roundels of swaddled babies on the facade of the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence are among his most beloved works. His prolific workshop made della Robbia terracotta synonymous with Florentine Renaissance devotional art.
