Andrea Pisano (c. 1290-1348) was an Italian sculptor and architect who created the first set of bronze doors for the Florence Baptistery. Born Andrea da Pontedera (not actually from Pisa), he emerged as a leading sculptor in Trecento Florence. His 28-panel bronze doors (1330-36) depict the life of John the Baptist with elegant, contained compositions influenced by Giotto's painting style.
Andrea also served as head architect of Florence Cathedral after Giotto's death and later directed the building of Orvieto Cathedral. His relief panels for Giotto's campanile in Florence illustrate the arts, sciences, and labors of mankind. These works bridged the gap between Gothic sculpture and the coming Renaissance.
