Antico (Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi)
Italian
Antico (Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi, c. 1460-1528) was an Italian sculptor who earned his nickname for his devotion to recreating ancient Roman bronzes. Working at the Gonzaga court in Mantua, he produced exquisitely finished small bronzes of classical subjects, often partially gilded and inlaid with silver.
His statuettes of Apollo, Venus, Hercules, and other classical figures are among the finest Renaissance bronzes. Unlike merely copying antiquities, Antico combined archaeological accuracy with contemporary refinement.
