Antonio Abondio (1538-1591) was an Italian medalist and wax modeler who served as court medalist to the Habsburg emperors Maximilian II and Rudolf II in Vienna and Prague. Born in Riva del Garda, he trained in Milan and became one of the finest portrait medalists of the late Renaissance.
Abondio's wax portrait reliefs are exceptionally rare and prized for their delicate detail. His medals of Habsburg rulers and court figures combine Italian refinement with the precision demanded by Northern European patrons. He spent his most productive years at the court of Rudolf II in Prague, one of Europe's great centers of art patronage.
