Antonio Rossellino
Italian
Antonio Rossellino (1427-c. 1479) was a Florentine sculptor of the Early Renaissance, known for his refined marble portrait busts and funerary monuments. Born Antonio Gamberelli, he was the youngest of five brothers who were all stonecutters or architects. He trained in his brother Bernardo's workshop and quickly established his own reputation for delicate carving and naturalistic detail.
His tomb of the Cardinal of Portugal (1461-66) in San Miniato al Monte, Florence, is a masterwork of Renaissance funerary sculpture, combining architecture, relief, and freestanding figures. His marble busts of children and young women are prized for their gentle warmth and lifelike surfaces.
