Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) was a British sculptor and one of the leading figures of the international modern art movement. Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, she studied at the Leeds School of Art (alongside Henry Moore) and the Royal College of Art in London. By the 1930s she was producing pierced and hollowed abstract forms in stone and wood that placed her at the forefront of European sculpture.
Hepworth settled in St Ives, Cornwall in 1939, and the coastal landscape deeply influenced her work. Her smooth, biomorphic forms with carved-out voids and taut string interiors became her signature. The Barbara Hepworth Museum and sculpture garden in St Ives preserves her studio exactly as she left it. Our collection includes works at leading British institutions.
