Bartolomeo Ammanati (1511-1592) was a Florentine sculptor and architect who created the controversial Fountain of Neptune (1560-75) in Florence's Piazza della Signoria. Born in Settignano, he trained under Baccio Bandinelli and worked in Venice and Rome before returning to Florence under Medici patronage.
The Neptune fountain was mocked by Florentines (Michelangelo reportedly said "Ammannato, what a beautiful marble you've ruined"), but it remains a major Renaissance monument. As an architect, Ammanati designed the courtyard of the Palazzo Pitti and the Ponte Santa Trinita.
