Benedetto Buglioni (c. 1459-1521) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor who specialized in glazed terracotta, working in a tradition closely associated with the famous della Robbia workshop. Trained under Luca and Andrea della Robbia, Buglioni opened his own studio with his brother in the early 1480s and developed a softer, more watercolor-like glaze palette that distinguished his work from the brighter della Robbia style.
His terracotta sculptures served as more affordable alternatives to marble for churches and public buildings. His masterwork, a St. Christine statue in Bolsena (1503-1508), shows his skill at combining the medium's decorative qualities with devotional purpose. Our collection includes 3 works at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
