Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri, 1581-1641) was an Italian Baroque painter from Bologna who became one of the leading classicist painters in Rome. Trained in the Carracci academy, he favored clear compositions, idealized figures, and balanced design over the more dramatic approach of Caravaggio's followers.
His frescoes in Sant'Andrea della Valle and San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome are major Baroque achievements. His Last Communion of St. Jerome was considered a masterwork for centuries. Domenichino's classicizing approach influenced Poussin and later academic painters.
