Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) was an American painter, book illustrator, and sculptor who spent most of his career in Rome. Known for his visionary, symbolic paintings featuring mysterious desert landscapes, cosmic imagery, and mythological subjects.
His illustrations for Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (1884) are considered his masterwork: 55 drawings combining Art Nouveau decorative sense with philosophical depth. He also created mosaics for the Library of Congress.
