Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) was a French sculptor who specialized in equestrian monuments and animal subjects. Nephew and student of the great animal sculptor François Rude, Frémiet became professor of animal drawing at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. His gilded equestrian Joan of Arc in the Place des Pyramides, Paris, is one of the city's most recognizable monuments.
Frémiet combined scientific accuracy with dramatic storytelling. His bronze gorilla groups, particularly Gorilla Carrying Off a Woman (1887), stirred controversy and fascination at the Paris Salon. He also created the Saint Michael for the spire of Mont Saint-Michel. His animal bronzes at the Musée d'Orsay demonstrate a level of anatomical precision that reflects his years of studying specimens at the natural history museum.
