Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501) was a Sienese painter, sculptor, architect, and engineer who epitomized the Renaissance polymath. He served Duke Federico da Montefeltro of Urbino as military architect and wrote an influential treatise on architecture and engineering.
His bronze reliefs, including a Deposition in the Victoria and Albert Museum, show elegant classicism. He designed over 70 fortresses across central Italy and contributed to the design of churches in Urbino and Cortona.
