Frederic Remington (1861-1909) was an American painter, illustrator, and sculptor who specialized in depictions of the American West. Born in Canton, New York, he traveled extensively through the Western territories in the 1880s, sketching cowboys, cavalrymen, and Native Americans. His illustrations for Harper's Weekly and other magazines made him the most popular artist of the frontier era.
Remington turned to bronze sculpture in 1895, and his first piece, The Broncho Buster, became an instant classic. He produced around 22 bronze sculptures and over 2,700 paintings and drawings during his short career. Our collection includes 5 works at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
