Georg Raphael Donner (1693-1741) was an Austrian Baroque sculptor who became the leading artist in Central Europe during the early 18th century. Born in Essling near Vienna, he worked at the courts of Salzburg, Bratislava, and Vienna, developing a classically refined style unusual for Baroque sculpture.
His Providentia Fountain (1739) in Vienna's Neuer Markt is his masterwork, featuring lead figures of remarkable grace and restraint. Donner's cool classicism anticipated Neoclassical taste by several decades.
