Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652-1725) was the leading sculptor in Florence during the late Baroque period, serving as court sculptor and architect to Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici. Born in Florence, he trained in Rome before returning to dominate Florentine sculpture for four decades.
Foggini created bronze reliefs, marble altars, and elaborate decorative schemes for Medici churches and palaces. His bronze reliefs for the Cappella Feroni in the Santissima Annunziata and his work in the Medici chapels at San Lorenzo demonstrate virtuoso casting and richly theatrical compositions. He also designed pietra dura (hardstone mosaic) furnishings for the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
