Giovanni della Robbia (1469-1529) was a Florentine sculptor who continued the family tradition of glazed terracotta sculpture pioneered by his grandfather Luca and his father Andrea della Robbia. He ran the della Robbia workshop during its final productive decades, creating polychrome glazed altarpieces, lunettes, and decorative roundels.
Giovanni expanded the family palette beyond the characteristic blue and white, introducing greens, purples, and yellows into increasingly elaborate compositions. His work at the Ospedale del Ceppo in Pistoia, a polychrome terracotta frieze depicting the Seven Works of Mercy, is one of his most ambitious projects. The workshop declined after his death.
