Giovanni Francesco Rustici (1474-1554) was a Florentine sculptor who trained under Verrocchio and was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. His masterwork is the bronze group of the Preaching of St. John the Baptist above the north door of the Florence Baptistery, reportedly made with Leonardo's advice.
Rustici eventually moved to France at the invitation of Francis I, where he spent his final years. His Baptistery bronzes show a dramatic narrative energy that bridges the High Renaissance and early Mannerism.
