Giovanni Pisano (c. 1250-c. 1315) was an Italian sculptor and architect who brought emotional intensity and dramatic movement to Gothic sculpture in Italy. Son of the great sculptor Nicola Pisano, Giovanni trained in his father's workshop and collaborated on the pulpit of Siena Cathedral before striking out on his own.
Giovanni's pulpits at Pistoia (1297-1301) and Pisa Cathedral (1302-10) feature deeply undercut reliefs with turbulent crowds and expressive figures that go well beyond his father's more classical restraint. He also carved the facade figures of Siena Cathedral and a celebrated ivory Madonna and Child. His emotional, almost proto-Renaissance style influenced Tuscan sculpture for generations.
