Guo Xi (c. 1020-c. 1090) was a Chinese landscape painter of the Northern Song Dynasty, considered one of the greatest masters in the history of Chinese art. He served as court painter to Emperor Shenzong and wrote the influential treatise The Lofty Message of Forest and Streams, which laid out principles for landscape painting.
His Early Spring (1072) in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, is considered one of the greatest Chinese landscape paintings. Guo Xi developed the concept of "three distances" in landscape composition and pioneered techniques for depicting atmospheric effects and seasonal change in ink wash.
