Hans Multscher (c. 1400-1467) was a German sculptor and painter who ran a major workshop in Ulm, creating powerfully realistic altarpieces and stone figures that mark the transition from International Gothic to the more naturalistic style of the late 15th century.
His figures on the west portal of Ulm Minster and his carved altarpieces demonstrate a robust, earthy realism that broke with earlier Gothic elegance. Multscher was one of the first German sculptors to create convincingly three-dimensional figures with individual character.
