James Pradier (1790-1852), born Jean-Jacques Pradier in Geneva, was one of the most renowned Swiss sculptors of the 19th century. He won the Prix de Rome and studied at the Villa Medici from 1814 to 1818 before launching his career at the Paris Salon in 1819. His Neoclassical style combined cool, polished finishes with a sensual treatment of the human figure.
Pradier secured major public commissions in Paris and was known for mythological subjects with subtle erotic undertones beneath their classical surface. He was one of the most commercially successful sculptors of his generation. Our collection includes 3 works at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
