John Trumbull (1756-1843) was an American painter best known for his historical paintings of the American Revolution. Born in Lebanon, Connecticut, he served as an aide-de-camp to George Washington before studying art in London under Benjamin West. Trumbull's firsthand experience of the war gave his paintings an authority that pure studio painters couldn't match.
His most famous work, Declaration of Independence, hangs in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. He also painted battle scenes, portraits of Founding Fathers, and landscapes. Trumbull donated his collection to Yale, founding what became the Yale University Art Gallery, the oldest college art museum in the Western hemisphere.
