Jonathan Scott Hartley (1845-1912) was an American sculptor who specialized in portrait busts and ideal figures during the Gilded Age. Born in Albany, New York, he studied at the Royal Academy in London and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became the son-in-law of painter John Frederick Kensett.
Hartley produced portrait busts of prominent Americans, including writers, politicians, and artists. His work reflects the polished academic naturalism popular in late 19th-century American sculpture, with careful attention to individual character and dignified presentation.
