Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer (1696-1770) was a German Rococo sculptor and stuccoist who created some of the most exuberant church decorations in southern Germany. He came from a family of artists in Linz am Rhein and worked primarily around Lake Constance, where he decorated numerous churches and pilgrimage sites.
His masterwork is the sculptural decoration of the Pilgrimage Church of Birnau on Lake Constance, where lively stucco angels, putti, and ornamental figures animate the bright white and gold interior. The famous Honey Thief putto at Birnau, a chubby cherub stealing honey from a beehive, is one of the most beloved Rococo sculptures in Germany.
