Joseph Chinard (1756-1813) was a French sculptor from Lyon who became one of the most accomplished Neoclassical portrait artists during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. He studied in Rome and returned to Lyon, where he created elegant terracotta and marble busts.
Chinard's portrait busts of Juliette Récamier and other prominent women of the era demonstrate a graceful naturalism within the Neoclassical framework. He also produced medallions and small-scale works of refined delicacy.
