Juan Martínez Montañés
Spanish
Juan Martínez Montañés (1568-1649) was a Spanish sculptor known as "the god of wood" for his mastery of polychrome wooden religious sculpture. Working in Seville, he became the leading sculptor of the Spanish Golden Age, creating intensely lifelike figures of Christ, the Virgin, and saints for churches and religious processions.
His Christ of Clemency (1603-06) in Seville Cathedral is considered one of the greatest Crucifixion sculptures ever carved. Montañés' figures combine anatomical precision with deep spiritual intensity, and many are still carried through Seville's streets during Holy Week processions.
