Leonhard Kern (1588-1662) was a German sculptor who worked in ivory and alabaster, producing small-scale figures of remarkable refinement. Born in Forchtenberg, he trained in Italy and absorbed classical and Baroque influences before returning to work in Schwäbisch Hall and for the Württemberg court.
Kern's ivory statuettes of mythological and biblical subjects are among the finest examples of German Baroque small sculpture. His figures show strong Italian influence tempered by a northern precision in surface detail.
