Nicolaus Gerhaert (c. 1420-1473) was a Dutch-born sculptor who worked in Strasbourg and Vienna, creating some of the most emotionally expressive Late Gothic stone carvings in Northern Europe. His figures show a psychological depth and naturalistic detail that anticipate Renaissance sculpture.
His self-portrait bust in Strasbourg and the sandstone figures from the former Strasbourg chancery are his best-known works. Gerhaert brought a new level of individual characterization to Gothic sculpture that influenced German and Austrian carvers for decades.
