Pierino da Vinci (1529-1553) was a Florentine sculptor who showed extraordinary promise before dying at just 23. He was the nephew of Leonardo da Vinci (his father Bartolomeo was Leonardo's half-brother) and trained under Niccolò Tribolo and Baccio Bandinelli. Giorgio Vasari praised him highly in the Lives of the Artists.
Despite his short career, Pierino produced accomplished marble reliefs and small bronzes influenced by Michelangelo. His River God and reliefs of Cosimo de' Medici show a mature understanding of classical form that suggested he might have rivaled the great sculptors of his era had he lived. His works are rare and highly valued.
