Pietro Tacca (1577-1640) was an Italian sculptor and the chief pupil of Giambologna, whom he succeeded as court sculptor to the Medici in 1608. Working in Florence, Tacca bridged the Mannerist and early Baroque styles, producing monumental bronzes that remain landmarks of their cities.
His most famous works include the Monument of the Four Moors in Livorno and the equestrian statue of Philip IV in Madrid, notable for its daringly balanced rearing horse. He also created Florence's beloved Il Porcellino fountain, a bronze boar whose nose visitors rub for luck. Our collection includes 3 works at the Art Institute of Chicago.
