Pinturicchio (c. 1454-1513), born Bernardino di Betto, was an Italian Renaissance painter from Perugia known for his brilliantly colorful, richly decorated frescoes. He worked as Perugino's assistant before establishing his own reputation through major commissions in Rome and Siena.
Pinturicchio decorated the Borgia Apartments in the Vatican for Pope Alexander VI (1492-94) and the Piccolomini Library in Siena Cathedral (1502-08). His frescoes feature lavish gold leaf, vivid colors, and elaborate decorative borders. While less psychologically complex than his contemporaries, his festive visual richness made him one of the most popular fresco painters of his generation.
