Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916) was an Italian sculptor who specialized in animal bronzes of extraordinary sensitivity. Born in Milan, he was the younger brother of automobile designer Ettore Bugatti and the son of furniture designer Carlo Bugatti. Named after Rembrandt van Rijn, he showed precocious talent and was sculpting professionally by his teens.
Bugatti spent hours at the Antwerp Zoo, modeling animals from life with a fluid, impressionistic touch that captured movement and personality. His panthers, elephants, and big cats are among the most sought-after animal bronzes of the early 20th century. Depressed by the suffering of zoo animals during World War I (many were euthanized due to food shortages), he took his own life at 31.
