Rinaldo Carnielo (1853-1910) was an Italian sculptor from Florence known for intensely emotional works dealing with death, suffering, and social injustice. His Tenax Vitae (Clinging to Life), showing a skeletal figure desperately grasping at existence, caused a sensation when exhibited.
Carnielo's unflinching realism and dark subject matter set him apart from the idealized academic sculpture of his day. His funerary works and social commentary pieces anticipated the raw emotional directness of Expressionism.
