Robert Adam
British, Scottish
Robert Adam (1728-1792) was a Scottish architect and designer who created one of the most influential interior design styles in British history. The "Adam style" transformed Georgian architecture with its elegant Neoclassical interiors featuring delicate plasterwork, painted ceilings, and coordinated furniture, carpets, and metalwork.
Adam traveled to Italy and Dalmatia in the 1750s, studying Roman ruins and Renaissance architecture. Back in Britain, he and his brother James designed major country houses including Kedleston Hall, Syon House, and Osterley Park, where every detail from doorknobs to ceiling paintings was designed as a unified whole.
