Vincenzo Gemito (1852-1929) was a Neapolitan sculptor known for brilliantly naturalistic bronzes of street children, fishermen, and classical subjects. Abandoned as an infant at a Naples foundling hospital, he was raised by foster parents and showed extraordinary talent from childhood. He studied briefly at the Naples Academy but was largely self-taught.
Gemito's bronze busts and small figures capture the gritty vitality of Neapolitan street life with a realism that impressed even academic critics. His Fisherman and Water Carrier are among the most admired Italian bronzes of the late 19th century. He suffered a severe mental breakdown in 1887 and lived in seclusion for nearly 20 years before resuming work in the early 1900s.
