Yevgeny Vuchetich (1908-1974) was a Soviet sculptor who created some of the largest monumental sculptures of the 20th century. His most famous work is The Motherland Calls (1967) in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), an 279-foot figure of a woman raising a sword, one of the tallest statues in the world.
Vuchetich also created the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin's Treptower Park, featuring a Soviet soldier holding a child and crushing a swastika. His Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares bronze was presented to the United Nations in 1959 and stands in the UN garden.
