Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145) was a Chinese painter of the Song Dynasty best known for Along the River During the Qingming Festival, one of the most famous and important paintings in Chinese art. The horizontal hand scroll, over 17 feet long, depicts daily life in the Northern Song capital of Bianliang (modern Kaifeng) with hundreds of figures, boats, buildings, and bridges.
The painting captures everything from street vendors and scholars to elaborate river boats and a famous rainbow bridge. It's been copied hundreds of times and remains one of China's most treasured national artworks, now at the Palace Museum in Beijing.
