The École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts traces its origins to 1648, when Cardinal Mazarin founded the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. After the Revolution abolished royal academies, the institution reformed as the École des Beaux-Arts in 1819. Since 1816, it has occupied the former Convent of the Petits-Augustins on Paris's Left Bank, a site that had sheltered medieval and Renaissance monuments rescued from revolutionary destruction.
While primarily a teaching institution, the École conserves approximately 450,000 works of art assembled over centuries to train students. The collection includes paintings by Ingres, Jacques-Louis David, and Paul Delaroche, whose massive hemicycle mural adorns the main amphitheater. Prints and drawings from the 16th through 18th centuries provided students with models of composition. The Palais des Études courtyard displays architectural fragments, and temporary exhibitions occasionally open to the public.
