The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Akademie der bildenden Künste) was established in 1692, making it one of the oldest art academies in Europe. Its picture gallery, open to the public, holds a small but distinguished collection built through faculty donations and bequests over three centuries.
The most famous work is Hieronymus Bosch's Last Judgment triptych, one of the most important Northern Renaissance paintings outside the Low Countries. Cranach, Rubens, and Guardi are also represented. The academy is perhaps equally known for twice rejecting Adolf Hitler's application in 1907 and 1908.
