The Belvedere comprises two Baroque palaces built between 1714 and 1723 for Prince Eugene of Savoy, Austria's greatest military commander. Architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt created the Upper Belvedere as a ceremonial reception hall, connected by formal gardens to the Lower Belvedere which served as the prince's summer residence. Empress Maria Theresa acquired the complex in 1752 and opened portions to the public in 1781, making it one of the world's first public museums.
The Upper Belvedere now houses Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present, with the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings. His The Kiss draws enormous crowds, its gold-leaf surface shimmering in the gallery light. Death and Life shows a darker side of Klimt's vision. Works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka represent Austrian Expressionism, while Caspar David Friedrich anchors the Romantic holdings. The Austrian State Treaty ending Allied occupation was signed in the Marble Hall in 1955.
