The Ateneum Art Museum holds the largest collection of classical art in Finland, with over 20,000 works from the 18th century to the 1960s. It opened in 1887 in a neo-Renaissance building on Rautatientori square, directly opposite Helsinki's central railway station. The building was designed by Theodor Höijer and decorated with busts of Raphael, Phidias, and Bramante on its facade.
Finnish art dominates the collection. Akseli Gallen-Kallela's Aino Triptych (1891) is the museum's most recognized painting, depicting scenes from Finland's national epic, the Kalevala. Gallen-Kallela pioneered a distinctly Finnish style blending Symbolism with National Romantic themes. The museum also covers Finnish golden age painters like Albert Edelfelt and Helene Schjerfbeck, whose stark self-portraits are among the most powerful in Nordic art.
