The Bargello (Palazzo del Podestà) in Florence is a fortress-like palace built in 1255 that became Italy's first national museum of sculpture in 1865. Before that, it served as a prison and police headquarters, and executions were carried out in its courtyard.
The collection holds some of the finest Renaissance sculpture in existence: Donatello's bronze David (the first free-standing nude since antiquity), Verrocchio's David, Cellini bronzes, and Giambologna's Mercury. Michelangelo's early Bacchus and Brutus are also here. The building's severe medieval architecture provides a striking backdrop for the sculptures.
