The Basilica di San Marco in Florence is a Dominican church and convent whose cells were famously frescoed by Fra Angelico between 1438 and 1445, commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici. The convent became a museum in 1869, preserving one of the most important cycles of Renaissance fresco painting in existence.
Fra Angelico painted over 40 individual frescoes across the dormitory cells and communal spaces, each designed for private devotion by the monks who lived there. The Annunciation at the top of the staircase is among the most reproduced images in art history. Girolamo Savonarola served as prior here in the 1490s before his dramatic downfall and execution.
