The Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama was founded in 1951 and holds one of the finest art collections in the southeastern United States, with over 27,000 objects spanning 3,000 years. The museum occupies a building in downtown Birmingham's cultural district.
The collection's greatest strength is its Asian art holdings, among the best in the American South. The Wedgwood collection is the largest outside England. European paintings, American art, African art, and pre-Columbian objects fill out an encyclopedic survey. The Charles W. Ireland Sculpture Garden adds outdoor installations to the experience. Admission is free.
